Caen : The banks of the river Orne are redrawn

Programme
The town of Caen has awarded Apsys and its partner Safaur, the regional developer, the mixed use development of a new area of the town; creating offices, residential, retailing and leisure space on the site of the banks of the river Orne. There is a direct connection with the SNCF station and the site will be the generator of future urban developments along the banks of the river. The project will create 17 650 sq m of retail with a 14 screen multiplex cinema, 23 000 sq m of residential space (of which 25% will be social housing), 24 500 sq m of offices and a 3* hotel.

Designed by the architectural firm of Valode and Pistre, according to the environmental standards of HQE®, the architecture of the whole project will combine modernity and tradition integrating use of light and choice of traditional materials such as Caen stone. The programme will be developed around the Place de l’Orne, with pools, fountains and landscaped features. This new public space will be the focal point, enlivened by restaurant terraces, a cinema and shops, focusing on household equipment and decoration, leisure, culture and sport. There will also be an underground public car park on several levels which will provide a sufficient number of car parking spaces for the new district and the station.
